The Lathe of Heaven

In doing some research about Mount Hood, I recalled "The Lathe of Heaven". I saw this wonderful Ursula K. Le Guin story run on WNET Channel 13 in the early 1980s. The story takes place in Portland, Oregon.

The protagonist has dreams that change reality. He is the only one aware of the changes. There's a lot of discussion about how this tale reflects Buddhist/Taoist memes colliding with Western world view.

"To let understanding stop at what cannot be understood is a high attainment. Those who cannot do it will be destroyed on the lathe of heaven. (知止乎其所不能知,至矣。若有不即是者,天鈞敗之。)"

The video of "The Lathe of Heaven" is in 12 parts on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Anl0nKLABWo It is also available on Netflix at http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The-Lathe-of-Heaven/6...

I suggest *not* reading the Wikipedia article - spoilers. I highly recommend the book as well.

IMDB information at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081036/ Be sure to check out the clever filming locations (again, after you've watched the movie IMO.) It was filmed on a budget of $250,000. WOW

There's also a 2002 remake that ran on A&E which I have not seen - yet.

Now, beware of spoilers, but more info about the 1980 movie at

Happy Thanksgiving and peace to all.
